Motivational Treatment Plans for Pediatric In-Patients
Developed as part of a three day transatlantic hackathon, hosted by the 5G Transatlantic Lab.

Design process including interviews to patients, user research and brainstorming

Use of behavioural nudges to improve compliance of patient treatment plans.

Problem
Treatment adherence in pediatric inpatient hospitals is a significant challenge, with 25% to 50% of patients struggling due to a lack of motivation.
Through interviews with pediatric patients and their families, we uncovered some emotional hurdles that affect adherence, often expressed through these questions:
-
Am I in this alone?
-
What will happen to me? Will I survive?
-
Why is this happening to me? When will it end?
Outcome
We designed a gamified experience of the patient journey where patients receive personalized rewards from their families and friends upon achieving therapeutic milestones, such as completing chemotherapy cycles, gaining weight, or reaching physical therapy goals.
Process
Over 48 hours, as part of an international team, we:
-
Conducted interviews with pediatric patients and their families.
-
Developed a stakeholder map to identify key relationships.
-
Designed an app mockup for initial UI iterations.
-
Prototyped a business model to ensure feasibility.
